Gone pickin'

Along with the twilight parade, another of our favorite summer traditions is going berry picking. Ripe, red, juicy, strawberries. A local farm knows how to grow the sweetest. Today was so nice that we headed out straight from swim lessons and the Girls wasted no time in making a beeline for the fields.
Of course one must wear the appropriate accessories - a hat...

and big sunglasses are a must.
Baby Sister wasn't much for picking but she was good at inspecting.

Waving to the tractor-pulled wagon was high on her priority list as well.

But once it had passed it was back to the business of quality control.

She did try to run her little pint basket atop the plant leaves in a sweeping motion as if that were all it took to gather the berries. But when that didn't work she was quite content to walk the seemingly endless rows between the plants.
The beginnings of our bounty.
Thumb-sucking and photo-op break.
Jelly shoes - probably not the best accessory for keeping little feet clean.

Love, love, love this Girl.
Sweet lil' Miss I had to stand to even be seen above the tops of the plants.
But she much preferred sitting in the dirt, picking, plucking stems off and tasting strawberries. The only one of the kids that actually ate berries in the field. Last year Miss A and the Girl probably ate just as many (if not more) berries as they picked and put into the baskets. One in the mouth, one in the basket.
Two and a half hours and 19.2 pounds later.
And unlike last year, Miss A and the Girl did not come home looking like children from a remote tribal village with dirt smeared all over their faces. Although this picture is a reminder that maybe sunblock does belong in places where the sun supposedly doesn't shine.
No better way to round out the expedition than with a ride back to the barn.
By the time we arrived back home, just a short 15-minute drive, the Girls looked like this. Nothing like some time in the sun to tucker you out.
We had just enough time for a short nap before we were gone picnicin' in the park for dinner with some other families from church.
After some picnic fare it was time for play...
and a game of t-ball. Ah, it doesn't get much better than this!
