Eye Candy

I didn't even realize that today was Friday the 13th. Not that it matters unless you are superstitious, which I'm not. But today was
as un-Friday the 13th as you could get, at least for us anyway. We spent the late morning and afternoon relaxing on the beach with friends. While the Girls shoveled sand and dug holes, I lounged under the shade of our beach umbrella enjoying the blue skies, the white foam on the crest of the ocean waves, the warm sunshine and cool breeze, but most of all I enjoyed the eye candy - my Girls, playing happily,
totally content with the handful of sand toys that we'd brought along. Such a simple afternoon, devoid of the restlessness that
sometimes brews when we are couped up inside despite the mound of toys and games that fill the nooks and crannies of our home. Today at the beach there was no arguing or fighting over toys. No whining about not having anything to do. Just quiet chatter interrupted only by excited cries of glee when the tracks just a few hundred feet behind us would rumble with the sound of a passing train. It was an ideal Friday
summer afternoon. One that served as a gentle reminder of the goodness of life when it is at it's most basic, unfettered by materialistic ideals or unnecessary stresses. It seemed only fitting that we should end our excursion with a trip to the little local candy shop just a handful of blocks up main street from the beach. After unloading all of our beach stuff at the car, the Girls and I walked hand-in-hand
past the quaint shops lining the sidewalk until we arrived at paradise. Or at least the Girl's idea of paradise. Her own, more literal version, of eye candy. So many vivid colors adorning every wall and table surface. So much sweet goodness to choose from. It took several trips around the store and some serious contemplation before the Girl made her selections. A pastel rainbow gummy seahorse and a blueberry candy stick. For Baby
Sister it was a much easier choice. She stuck with the familiar - a Dum-Dum lollipop. The one she happened to select was a
flavor I'd never seen before...banana split. Yum! The best part was the 45-cent total. Reminded me of the days of my youth when my siblings and I would walk to the drugstore near my house with my Mom and spend our money on penny candy. Just goes to show that some of the best things in life, like days at the beach and special treats don't necessarily have to cost a lot. In return, you can't put a price on the
memories that are created.
